Citation: MAREK, L.J., BARBER, B.L., KOSKINEN, W.C. LC/MS ANALYSIS OF CYCLOHEXANEDIONE OXIME HERBICIDES IN WATER AND SOIL. AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY. 2003. ABSTRACT. P. 20. Technical Abstract: A multiresidue method for determination of alloxydim, clethodim, and sethoxydim and clethodim sulfoxide and sethoxydim sulfoxide metabolites in water and soil by HPLC/electrospray/mass spectrometry (LC/ES/MS) is reported. Herbicides and metabolites could be confirmed and quantified using selected ion monitoring by LC/ES/MS. For instance, extraction of water by C18-SPE resulted in percent recoveries as follows alloxydim, 117 11%; clethodim, 96 14%; and sethoxydim, 89 13%. The limit of quantitation (LOQ) was < 0.05 g L-1. These chemicals could also be quantitatively extracted from soil, however the LOQ was significantly higher. Analysis by LC/MS/MS decreased the LOQ. There was no evidence of oxidation of clethodim and sethoxydim during the extraction to their respective sulfoxides. We have shown that we can analyze and confirm three cyclohexanedione oxime herbicides and two metabolites in water and soil by LC/ES/MS, a method that should also be appropriate for other cyclohexanedione oximes.
