Technical Abstract: Investigations are currently ongoing to create a collection of crude seed extracts from the NCAUR Oilseed Repository in Peoria, IL. This diverse collection of seeds consists of greater than 22,000 different accessions from more than 60 different plant families collected throughout the world. Seeds are ground and extracted with a standard series of increasing polarity solvents and submitted for biological evaluation in various in-house prescreens. An organic extract of Diospyros dichrophylla demonstrated strong cytotoxic activity against brine shrimp (Anemia salina) and was therefore submitted for additional biological screening that included an evaluation of its ability to inhibit wheat radicle elongation. A thorough bioassay-guided investigation of the seeds of D. dichrophylla produced the growth inhibitory compound isodiospyrin.
