Interpretive Summary: This book chapter reviews the structural diversity of lichen compounds and their potential use. The first part of the chapter focuses on the pathway leading to the formation of these lichen compounds. The rest of the chapter presents the role of these compounds in nature and the potential use by humans. Several of the lichen compounds are believed to provide some protection against other organisms that may harm the lichen by infecting or feeding on them. Many of the biologically active lichen metabolites are being considered or used for potential pharmaceutical/medicinal purposes. Others are currently being used by the cosmetic industry.

Technical Abstract: This is a book chapter.
