Technical Abstract: This workshop represents the culminating meeting in a series of three organized by Karel Hala to update nomenclature for the chicken major histocompatibility complex (Mhc). The two earlier meetings were held during ISAG (International Society of Animal Genetics) biennial meetings in 1998 and 2000. Karel opened the workshop by presenting the list of reference B haplotypes and their sources from the earlier standardization published in Immunogenetics in 1982 by Briles et al. The status of the reference and other lines, and availability of the corresponding gene sequence data in Genbank were noted. The list was reviewed and revised in Table 2. Loci names were then discussed following a proposal for revising the Mhc nomenclature made first in 1994 by Larry Bacon following discussions with Henry Hunt, Lyman Crittenden and others. This proposal also provided the framework for discussion at the ISAG 2000 workshop. There was general concurrence in the acceptance of the proposed method for naming loci and alleles with some modifications discussed. The resulting modified version of the proposal is presented in Table I. It is concluded that the revised nomenclature will vastly simplify and improve existing nomenclature for the chicken Mhc.
