Title: A90586-11: A HIGH YIELDING PROCESSING SELECTION WITH FOLIAR AND TUBER RESISTANCE TO LATE BLIGHT.

Interpretive Summary: The new strains of the potato late blight pathogen have changed production practices and costs for growers because they are more aggressive and are resistant to some fungicides. The control of these new strains requires more frequent applications of protectant fungicides, which has greatly increased production costs. In addition the disease is not always controlled adequately particularly the tuber rot phase. This abstract describes the development of a late blight resistant breeding selection A90586-11 by USDA-ARS and Tri-State cooperators. This selection has potential to be used as a frozen French fry processing variety and would allow growers to greatly reduce late blight control costs.

Technical Abstract: Utilizing Polish germplasm, potato selection A90586-11 has been developed with resistance to both foliar and tuber infection by Phytophthora infestans. In five, late blight field trials conducted over a three-year period, A90586-11 had AUDPC values that were 1/4 as large as those of Russet Norkotah, Shepody, Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank. In controlled laboratory tests for tuber blight resistance, A90586-11 averaged 0.6 percent blighted tubers while Ranger Russet and Russet Burbank averaged 33 percent and 16 percent, respectively. A90586-11 is also resistant to early blight, Verticillium wilt, and leafroll net necrosis. It is a high-yielding selection that produces long, white-skinned, uniform tubers with high specific gravities and low sugars making it suitable for French fry production. Its primary weakness is a level of blackspot susceptibility similar to its paternal parent, Ranger Russet.
