Title: DESIGN AND PREDICTION OF CONSTRUCTED WETLAND TREATMENT FOR SWINE WASTEWATER

Technical Abstract: Research on the use of constructed wetland systems to treat lagoon effluent was conducted in Duplin County, NC, and North Carolina A&T State University. In Duplin County, NC, traditional continuous wetland cells were planted with a polyculture of natural wetland plants including rush, bulrush, bur-reed, and cattails. At NC A&T, the wetland cells consist of wetland-marsh-wetland cells with similar vegetation. Hydrologic measurements including inflow, outflow, water depth, and meteorological variables were collected. Automated water samplers collected composite water samples at both the inlet and outlet of each wetland system. Constructed wetland data with loading rates ranging from 3 to 25 kg N/ha/day will be analyzed to evaluate the wetlands performance. Design parameters based on the performance of the wetland treatment cells will be compared to published design criteria used by USDA-NRCS and other established wetland design criteria.
