Technical Abstract: For about the last score of the 20th century individual and networks of automated meteorological stations have been installed throughout the United States and many other countries worldwide. For a variety of reasons, generally multiple purpose usage, the data collected are being archived in databases. Quality control/quality assurance procedures; however, vary greatly if they are employed. Meek and Hatfield (1994) discussed what data quality control/quality assurance is in the context of an overall quality control/quality assurance program for data from automated weather stations. In addition, some possible methods for screening data are described and evaluated. This work presents a statistical basis for the screening rules and points to some possible additional methods. Then, in this perspective, a precis of the previous work of Meek and Hatfield (1994) is given. Finally further developments with methodology along with related long-term operational experience are reviewed.
