Technical Abstract:
Two calf management tips are reported. Unloading and loading causes the greatest amount of stress on young calves during transport. The young calves have difficulty navigating ramps and inclines. Neither do they exhibit a natural tendency to herd like heifers and cows. Low incline ramps or the use of calf carts or slings are beneficial in reducing transport stress. Recent research showed that during transport, young calves preferred to lie down and to face the direction of travel. This information will be useful for calf growers to help them provide the least stressful calf transport.
