Technical Abstract: Biodiesel is a promising alternative diesel fuel derived from vegetable oils, animal fats or used frying oils. This article presents a lay overview of the status of biodiesel. Areas briefly discussed are historical aspects, economic and regulatory issues, conversion of feedstock to biodiesel fuel, research problems and technical comparison to petroleum-derived diesel fuel.
