Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The last new varieties list for southernpea (cowpea) was prepared in 1996. This newly updated list contains descriptions of 12 varieties not listed on earlier lists. Four of the new varieties were released by the University of Arkansas, two by Auburn University, one by Louisiana State University, one by the University of California at Riverside, and four by the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory, USDA-ARS, Charleston, SC. Seven of the new listings are pinkeye-type varieties, three are blackeye-type varieties, and two are cream-type varieties. Six of the listings exhibit persistent-green seed phenoypes (two varieties are homozygous for the green testa gene and four varieties are homozygous for the green cotyledon gene).
