Interpretive Summary: As president of the Lepidopterists' Society (1999-2000), I was responsible for delivering a "Presidential Address" at the banquet of the annual meeting of the Lepidopterists' Society at Wake Forest University, Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This paper is that address. The paper presents a humorous look at scientific nomenclature and some of the rules and recommendations that govern its use.

Technical Abstract: The formation and use of scientific nomenclature is governed by a document called The International Code of Zoological Nomenclature. A few of the rules and recommendations of the Code are reviewed in this paper, and a few humorous examples are spotlighted.
