Interpretive Summary: The introduction of new or alternative crops is vital to the health of American agriculture because of the benefits provided to the grower, the consumer, and the agricultural economy. These benefits include a diversity of novel agricultural products and the economic advantages associated with new crop development. This article surveys recent efforts by the USDA in this area and discusses industrial products obtained from several non-commodity species and the potential markets for these new crop products.

Technical Abstract: The New Crops Research group of the USDA, NCAUR facilitates the commercialization of new industrial oilseed crops by developing value-added products. This includes research on new triglycerides and fatty acid chemistry, processing technology, and production of pilot-scale quantities for testing.
