Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Dissipation of hexazinone was determined in three different Spanish soils devoted to forest nurseries for Pinus pinea and nigra. Field dissipation results can be interpreted in view of laboratory sorption-desorption and mobility studies. Fastest field dissipation (66 percent of applied dissipated in 35 d) was in Segovia soil, which had the lowest percent OC and percent clay of the three soils, presumably due to leaching out of the top 30 cm of soil. The greater dissipation at 114 d after application in the Toledo soil (31 percent of applied) compared to the Burgos soil (10 percent of applied) is attributed to faster biodegradation based on laboratory sorption and leaching studies. Sorption capacity of the soils, as measured from Freundlich sorption isotherms was Toledo > Burgos > Segovia; and is directly correlated to percent soil OC. The mobility in soils, as measured by column leaching studies was Toledo < Burgos < Segovia.
