Interpretive Summary: Aquatic plants of tropical regions are relatively unknown, yet are important as plants of potential horticultural interest as well as indicators of biologically diverse areas to be preserved. In addition some aquatic plants have become invasive species, thus knowledge of their occurrence in nature is important for documenting sites from which they could be introduced into the United States. Three relatively rare species of aquatic plants have been discovered for the first time in a region of Oaxaca, Mexico. One of these is related to the water-hyacinth and may harbor organisms that are useful in control of this aquatic noxious weed. Another is a recently described rare species of water-lily. menting the presence of such plants is essential for their preservation, utilization, and control. This publication will be used by botanists, horticulturalists, and conservationists in developing floristic accounts of plants of this region, investigating these plants as potential cultivated species, and preventing their invasion of areas outside their native range.

Technical Abstract: Bergia capensis L. (Elatinaceae), Eichhornia paniculata (Sprengel) SolmsLaub. (Pontederiaceae), and Nymphaea novogranatensis Wiersema (Nymphaeaceae), three of aquative vascular plants, are reported for the first time from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, state of Oaxaca, Mexico
