Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Phytoremediation is a plant-based technology that has been used for managing selenium (Se) in central California soils. The phytoremediation technology uses plants to extract, accumulate, and volatilize Se by the plant and in conjunction with microbial activity. Any one or a combination of these responses may lead to lower concentrations of soluble Se in the soil. Using Se accumulator crops for reclaiming Se-laden soils requires a long-term commitment and should be practiced in conjunction with water management practices.
