Title: Isolation and Characterization of Novel Tumor Cell Growth-Inhibitory Metabolites from Marine Sponges

Technical Abstract: Marine sponges have yielded a wide variety of biologically active, structurally unique secondary metabolites. Many of these compounds have exhibited potent cellular antiproliferative or cytotoxic activities. Sponge extracts which produce distinctive patterns of differential cellular growth inhibition in the National Cancer Institute's 60-cell antitumor screen have been selected for detailed chemical study within our laboratory. The latest results from bioassay-guided fractionation of these sponge extracts and structural elucidation of the active constituents will be described.
