Interpretive Summary: Many species of soldier flies (family Stratiomyidae) are beneficial to agriculture in that the larvae help to decompose plant material, although a few species are known to attack living plants, such as grass roots. The information contained in this publication provides an exhaustive summary of the taxonomic literature, bringing up to date the nomenclature and classification of this large family, and presenting known geographic range for each of the 3000+ species in the family. This publication will be extremely valuable to other scientists as well as regulatory personnel charged with keeping pest insects out of the U.S. because it is a compendium of basic data on the entire family.

Technical Abstract: The world fauna of Stratiomyidae is cataloged, which includes approximately 400 valid genera and 3000 species. A phylogenetic analysis is presented which is then formalized in a classification of the family that is used to arrange the catalog. Full synonymy and geographic distribution data is presented for each species. New synonymies and new combinations are documented, and all literature has been rechecked and accurately dated. Over 100 notes on taxonomic placements and nomenclatural changes are presented in an appendix.
