Technical Abstract: The loss of phosphorus from agricultural lands and its subsequent transfer to surface waters has focused attention on agricultural phosphorus management. This fourth article on phosphorus and agriculture describes the ongoing efforts of the National Phosphorus Project. The Project represents a national consortium of researchers from ARS, NRCS, and universities, collaborating to identify environmental thresholds of soil phosphorus and develop improved site assessment indices. The fruition of these two objectives is expected to lead to the development of integrated nutrient management strategies that will promote the conservation of nutrients, protection of water quality and, ultimately, sustainable agriculture.
