Technical Abstract: A two-source (soil and canopy) energy balance model developed to use microwave-derived soil moisture with remotely sensed fractional vegetation cover, land use, and ancillary meteorological data is evaluated over the SGP-97 study area covered by the ESTAR observations. Basic model formulations are described, and model output for several test cases are presented. Preliminary model predictions are compared to tower, aircraft measurements, and model output using radiometric temperature observations. The results indicate that the model is fairly robust under the environmental conditions that existed during the Southern Great Plains 97 experiment. Limitations of the two-source model to predict reliable fluxes under more extreme environmental conditions (e.g., drought) are discussed.
