Title: CATALOG OF RUST RESISTANCE GENES IN SMALL GRAINS

Technical Abstract: Rusts are among the most important diseases of the small grain crops wheat, oat, barley, and rye. A large number of genes for resistance to these rusts have been found, but the known genes with large effects are nearly all race-specific. Because of the large number of different pathogenic races that exist in populations of rust fungi, breeding for resistance to rusts in small grains requires knowledge of the complex body of informatio on resistance genes. Scientists at the Cereal Disease Laboratory searched the available literature on genetics of resistance to rust and compiled a catalog of known genes for resistance to stem rust in wheat, oat, barley, and rye; leaf rust in wheat, barley, and rye; crown rust in oat; and stripe rust in wheat and barley. The catalog of rust resistance genes includes information on source of each gene, low infection type typical of its resistance, tester lines with the genes, linkage relationships with other resistance genes, and for wheat, the chromosome arm on which each gene is located. The catalog is maintained as an on-line data base that is updated periodically as new genes are reported.
