Technical Abstract: Many rust fungi are important plant pathogens of cultivated crops, others exist in the natural ecosystem as parasites of native plants, and still others are studied as potential biological control agents of troublesome weeds of tilled fields and rangeland. Regulations regarding movement of pathogenic fungi between states in infected plant material or as specimens for research require documentation of pathogen species native to the state involved and the host plant species on which the pathogen is known to exist in those states. Scientists at the Cereal Disease Laboratory compiled a list of species of rust fungi known to occur in Minnesota and the host plants on which they have been found. The list, which includes 789 rust/host species combinations, was derived from published literature as well as from unpublished personal records of qualified experts. The index is an on-line data base that can be sorted or searched by rust species or host species and is updated periodically as new records are discovered.
