Technical Abstract: Natural product extractions, such as the supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of cedarwood oil (CWO), are complex processes to model, and it is difficult to predict the results from theoretical principles. Rapid determination of the optimal SFE conditions, abetted by statistical methods, can reduce the complexity of the problem and save considerable ex- -perimental effort. In this study, the SFE of CWO was studied at pressures and temperatures up to 70MPa and 373 deg K, respectively, as well as the effect of length of extraction using an automated analytical extractor module. he effect of matrix age was also assessed and, along with moisture content of the extract, shown to be critical to the interpretation of the results. The chemical profiles of the extracts afforded using liquid CO2 (LCO2) extraction, supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2), and steam distillation were made using this approach. The SC-CO2 derived CWO and steam distilled CWO were compared for their similarities to the odor o the unextracted cedarwood. Finally, an assessment was made of the feasibility of synthesizing cedryl acetate from cedrol, a major component in CWO, allowing the evaluation of possible synthetic routes, reaction conditions, and appropriate catalysts for this conversion.
