Technical Abstract:
The accelerated eutrophication of U.S. water bodies has focused attention on the risk of nutrient loss from agricultural lands to water. The potential for diffuse loss of nutrients from agricultural lands involves a combination of source and transport risks, both of which are represented in the proposed Nitrogen and Phosphorus Indices. Source risk describes the potential availability of agricultural nutrients to transport mechanisms, such as erosion, runoff and leaching. This paper examines source risk factors for nitrogen and phosphorus, the two nutrients of greatest concern to farmers and environmental managers alike.
