Technical Abstract: Recently composition of the plant virus family Potiviridae has been revised. This index entry presents, in tabular form, the main properties and members of the revised genus Rymnovirus. Virions are flexuous rods 15 x 700 nm, comprised of a single capsid protein and a (+)-sense RNA genome. Ryegrass mosaic virus is the type species of the genus. Additional member species are Agropyron mosaic virus and Hordeum mosaic virus. Spartina mottle virus is a tentative member of the genus. These viruses replicate in the cytoplasm and induce pinwheel inclusion bodies typical of all potyviruses. Ryegrass mosaic virus and Agropyron mosaic virus are transmitted by an eriophyid mite while no vector has been identified for the other viruses. Ryegrass mosaic virus occurs worldwide. GenBank accession numbers for nucleotide and protein sequences are provided to facilitate phylogenetic comparisons between Rymoviruses and any newly identified plant virus.
