Interpretive Summary: Dust cyclone research conducted at the USDA ARS labs in Mesilla Park, NM and Lubbock, TX. has resulted in designs that yield better compliance with air quality emissions regulations and also lower cotton gin operating costs. These findings are being recommended in two stages; with annual repairs gin managers are encouraged to add expansion chambers to the bottom of the cone section. With major rebuilds, new air inlets and air outlets are recommended. The reduction in back pressure resulting from these modifications pays for itself through lower electricity use.

Technical Abstract: A significant amount of recent research has concentrated on reducing emissions from cotton gins. The USDA-ARS laboratories in Las Cruces and Lubbock have recently completed tests on several modifications to the 1D3D cyclone. Results from these modifications indicate that significant emission reductions may be achieved. Of equal importance, the same research indicated that these emission reductions may be obtained while reducing the pressure drop across the cyclone
