Technical Abstract: It has been shown that oils can be encapsulated into starch by a jet-cooking process. The resulting starch-oil composite, Fantesk**TM, has found applications in food, medicine, cosmetics, agriculture, etc., by simply varying the composition of the encapsulated oil. Starch with encapsulated lubricating oils has been formulated into oil drilling mud and found to have good lubricating properties. Successful development of starch with encapsulated lubricating oils has a potential as a solid lubricant for various metal working operations. Starch based solid lubricants will have tremendous cost, environmental, and safety advantages over solid lubricants based on synthetic polymers. In this work, lubricating oil formulations comprising various amphiphilic components were used to produce solid sheets of starch-oil composites. The results of the investigation into the friction and wear properties of these solids will be discussed.
