Technical Abstract: Surveillance data of cattle and human isolates of Salmonella typhimurium DT104 indicate that this pathogen emerged much more rapidly than anticipated. Studies were done to determine the prevalence of DT104 in ground beef with a total of 404 samples obtained at retail stores from New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Denver, Atlanta, Houston, and Chicago. Salmonella sp. Were isolated from fourteen (3.5%) samples. Eight different serotypes were identified among the isolates, including S. typhimurium (5), S. lille (3), S. montevideo (1), S. hadar (1), S. meleagridis (1), S. cerro (1), S. kentucky (1) and S. muenster (1). Drug-resistance assays revealed that all five S. typhimurium isolates were resistant to ampicillin, streptomycin, sulphamethoxazole, and tetracycline, but sensitive to chloramphenicol. Phage typing revealed that all five S. typhimurium isolate were DT104A. All DT104 isolates were obtained from ground beef sampled from retail outlets in San Francisco, PFGE genomic DNA profiles of the five DT104 isolates from ground beef were identical to those of four DT104 isolates from cattle.
