Technical Abstract: Developing a sustainable biomass production system requires a low cost nutrient source and environmental impact assessment. This study was conducted 3 yr to determine yield of Alamo switchgrass and environmental impact from dairy waste application. Manure was applied in 1995 at rates up to 168 kg N/ha to switchgrass on a Windthorst fine sandy loam soil. Dairy lagoon effluent was applied in 1996 and 1997 at target rates of 0, 75, 150, 300, and 600 kg N/ha. Soil water was collected after rainfall at 46, 92, and 100 cm depths. Runoff water was collected downslope from treatment plots and a filter strip. Response to N was linear in 1996 and 1997 with a maximum yield of 16 Mg/ha. Forage recovery of N and P, changes in soil P, and impact on soil water and runoff N and P will be presented.
