Technical Abstract: Public agencies are facing greater accountability for the use of public research and extension dollars. At the same time, agricultural and ecological research is focusing on larger and larger scales. These are only two of the many forces impinging on education and research as we enter the 21st century. This symposium takes the view that forging links between nindividual disciplines and societies (both scientific and nonscientific) i essential to survival and relevance in the 21st century. Speakers will focus on three questions: Is there a need to link societies and disciplines? If so, what is the value to each party involved? What does it take to do this successfully?
