Technical Abstract: Passive transfer of antibodies from maternal colostrum into the circulation of neonatal calves contributes significantly to protection against postnatal infections. Uptake of antibodies from the lumen of the intestine in rodents is mediated by a specific receptor expressed on the luminal surface of enterocytes designated FcRn. To define the role of FcRn in passive transfer of immunoglobulin in calves, both cDNA and partial genomic sequence for bovine FcRn (bFcRn) were determined. Candidate SNP's were identified by sequencing PCR amplification products of intron 5 from 24 parents in the MARC reference population. Polymorphisms were verified by segregation in the reference population progeny. Identification of SNP markers for bFcRn and characterization of bFcRn allelic variation in cattle populations will allow further studies on genetic effects on passive transfer in calves.
