Technical Abstract: Strawberries are an important, high valued crop in California. They are irrigated with drip irrigation systems on beds covered with plastic mulch. Growers use Methyl bromide fumigation of the soil before planting to control diseases and pests. Methyl bromide use is being discontinued because it may deplete atmospheric ozone. We are investigating application nof alternative water-soluble chemicals, through the drip irrigation system It appears that 1,3-dichloropropene in combination with chloropicrin (Telone C35) applied through drip irrigation can adequately control strawberry pests. We are devising chemical injection methods, operating procedures, and management practices that maximize efficacy while minimizing human and environmental risk.
