Technical Abstract:
Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant and animal growth that is vital to crop and livestock production. In this article, the first of a series on phosphorus and agriculture, the authors describe the evolving problem of non-point source phosphorus pollution and its relevance to agriculture. The imbalance of phosphorus imports and exports, particularly yin livestock operations, is identified as a key cause of phosphorus accumulation in agricultural soils. Common misconceptions regarding phosphorus are also highlighted.
