Technical Abstract: Biotechnology provides new opportunities in the improvement of watermelon. There is much interest in the development of molecular markers, and in the incorporation of disease resistance genes into watermelon. Biotechnological applications to improve watermelon include: 1) the development of molecular markers useful in conventional breeding programs, 2) the isolation and characterization of valuable genes (genes that confer disease resistance and improve yield), and genetic transformation of watermelon with such genes, and 3) the improvement of watermelon using tissue culture techniques. This review outlines examples of current biotechnological approaches for the improvement of watermelon.
