Interpretive Summary: Experiments were conducted to evaluate microwave observations made by instruments on board the Russian MIR spacecraft for soil moisture measurement. The instrument package used, Priroda, included many new and unique sensors. Among these are microwave radiometers with frequencies and resolutions similar to those that will be part of the next generation of earth remote sensing satellites. This was a rare opportunity to link satellite based soil moisture with ground observations of what the sensor measures. A study was designed to obtain the full suite of Priroda observations over extended time periods; however, the spacecraft docking accident damaged the platform shortly after the project was initiated. As a result, we were only able to obtain a limited data set. Results of analyses of these data will be useful to future efforts in satellite based soil moisture mapping for hydrology and climate research.

Technical Abstract: An experiment was conducted as part of a large regional study to acquire a time series of Priroda satellite observations in conjunction with soil moisture and other important ground and meteorological observations. Priroda is a remote sensing module on the MIR space station. The experiment was a component of the Southern Great Plains 1997 Hydrology Experiment. Due to MIR platform problems during the experiment, only a very limited set of data was obtained. Based upon these data, an evaluation of the Priroda sensor performance and some analyses of soil moisture conditions were conducted. These results provide important information for utilizing Priroda data and for soil moisture algorithm development.
