Technical Abstract: The National Small Grains Collection (NSGC), a part of the National Plant Germplasm System, is the working collection for the distribution of small grains germplasm. The NSGC contains 26,785 accessions of Hordeum, split among 29 species and subspecies, collected from 102 countries. The collection contains cultivated types of barley along with its wild relatives. Researchers may use the collection as a source of germplasm and information. Observational data is maintained for over 60 descriptors, as well as passport data and images, on the Germplasm Research Information Network (GRIN) system. The germplasm contained in the NSGC is distributed free of charge to researchers and institutions, and may be ordered via phone, mail or the internet.
