Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The Chesapeake Bay watershed receives the highest pesticide application of any coastal area in the nation. Regional atmospheric transport of these chemicals to non-target areas is a concern. Knowledge regarding the spatial and temporal trends in atmoshperic deposition of pesticides to the Bay in relation to runoff sources is very limited. Dr. Dwight Glotfelty, USDA/ARS, carried out the initial studies of atmospheric transport and deposition of herbicides to the Chesapeake Bay. This work has been continued by other members of our laboratory in the Patuxent River watershed and through the development of predictive models combining estimated use patterns, soil volatilization studies, and meterological data. A review of the current state of the knowledge concerning atmospheric deposition to the Bay will be presented with goals for future research.
