Technical Abstract: Creation of novel ethanol-producing microorganisms has led to a change of expectations in the ethanol field. Previously, an industrial process was engineered to suit the microorganisms. Now, it is expected that microorganisms will be metabolically engineered to fit the process. We can expect improvement of existing strains through traditional strain adaptation and further genetic engineering along with development of entirely new ethanol-producing microorganisms. Each research approach holds considerable promise, with the possibility existing that different "industrially hardened" strains may find separate applications in the fermentation of specific feedstocks.
