Interpretive Summary: Several projects around the world have produced genetic maps of the bovine using both genetic markers common to several laboratories and markers unique from each laboratory. This paper is the report on the first workshop on the genetic map of bovine chromosome 4. Six laboratories contributed information from 62 genetic markers. Twenty-two were used in at least two independent laboratories and were used to construct a backbon (consensus) map. The remaining markers were subsequently incorporated to produce a comprehensive map of bovine chromosome 4. The comprehensive map provides a better coverage of the chromosome than any individual map produced to date. This map will enable the refinement of quantitative trait loci of economically important traits in cattle.

Technical Abstract: The report of the first workshop on the genetic map of bovine chromosome 4 (BTA4) is presented. Six laboratories contributed a total of 30,168 informative meioses from 62 loci. Twenty-two loci were typed by at least two independent laboratories and were used to construct a consensus linkage map of BTA4. The remaining loci were subsequently incorporated and a comprehensive map was produced. The sex-averaged consensus map covered 131.4 cM. The female map was 124.3 cM in length, while the male map was 134.3 cM. The comprehensive sex-averaged map spanned 141.6 cM. The length of the female and male maps were 123.1 cM and 156.4 cM, respectively. Average genetic distance between loci was 6 and 2.3 cM for the consensus and comprehensive linkage maps, respectively.
