Technical Abstract: Frost is a major factor in the use of winter grain legumes. In this review of the problem we discuss the importance of the means that grain legumes have for overcoming the problems induced by cold temperatures. The means to overcome frost include escape and tolerance or resistance. Screening methods for developing germplasm with resistance to frost include controlled environment evaluations at critical temperatures and durations. Molecular markers for the resistance genes would be of benefit to geneticists and breeders attempting to develop hardy germplasm. It was concluded that overcoming climatic stresses from cold temperatures during winter seasons is necessary for expanded production and for realizing expected yield benefits.
