Title: HYDROMETEOROLOGICAL DATA PREPARATION FOR A SPATIALLY DISTRIBUTED ENERGY BUDGET SNOWMELT MODEL

Technical Abstract: Spatially distributed hydrologic models require spatial fields of hydrometeorological data, rather than just station data or areal averages, as input. The estimation of time series of these fields is a nontrivial task requiring spatial interpolation and consideration of the variability of these quantities with topography. Several methods for developing the necessary time series of hydrometeorological spatial fields have been developed and applied in snowmelt and streamflow simulation models. These methods include detrended kriging for interpolating between station data, the incorporation of upper-air soundings, and the use of heuristic rules. The fields estimated include precipitation, temperature, dew point, wind, and solar radiation for daily and sub-daily time steps and for grid cell resolutions of (generally) 1 sq. km or smaller.
