Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: An overview of the pertinent traits of commercially available rice cultivars is important information for farmers as they decide which cultivars to plant each year. Jefferson is a new high yielding cultivar with good milling quality that is about one to two weeks earlier in maturity than Cypress and Gulfmont. Due to this earliness, the likelihood of harvesting a ratoon crop is increased with Jefferson. Jefferson also ha a significantly larger grain than most other long grain cultivars and thus, the seeding rate should be increased for it. Dixiebelle is another new long grain cultivar which is similar in maturity to Gulfmont. In addition to having conventional long grain cooking quality, it also has superior processing quality which is desired by the parboiling and canning industries. Dixiebelle has yield and milling quality intermediate to Cypress and Gulfmont. It's disease resistance is not as good as Jefferson's sbut is more similar to Gulfmont and Lemont.
