Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter provides background information on stalk boring caterpillars that are potential small-grain pests in North America. Four species are considered, European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hubner), smartweed borer, Ostrinia obumbratalis (Lederer), lotus borer, Ostrinia penitalis (Grote), and stalk borer, Papaipema nebris (Guenee). Most of the discussion emphasizes origin, distribution, description, pest status, life history and management of the European corn borer and stalk borer.
