Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Biobased and environmentally friendly lubricants are finding applications in many areas ranging from hydraulic fluids to grease. They offer excellent biodegradability and very low ecotoxicity; high viscosity index; improved tribological properties; lower volatility and flash points relative to petroleum based lubricants. Research on environmentally friendly and biobased lubricants is increasing rapidly and this book provides an up to date collective review of developments and approaches used in this emerging area of lubricants. The 21 chapters in the book cover a wide-range of critical topics of biobased and environmentally friendly lubricants including: novel biobased base oils and additives; biobased hydraulic lubricants; biodegradability and ecotoxicity issues; vegetable oil based fluids; chemical and enzymatic development methods of biobased lubricants; and a lot more. The book provides valuable insight and references for students, chemists, scientists, engineers, tribologists, professionals, and policy makers working or entering the field of environmentally friendly fluids and biobased lubricants in academia, government, or the corporate world.
