Interpretive Summary: In the current state of knowledge regarding relationships between flavonoid intake and health, many questions have not yet been answered. This release of the Flavonoid Values for USDA Survey Foods and Beverages 2007-2010 will facilitate continuing research efforts by permitting calculation of flavonoid intakes in the United States based on all foods and beverages reported in the Federal survey What We Eat in America (WWEIA), the dietary intake component of NHANES. Both components of this release, the Flavonoid Values for Survey Foods and Beverages 2007-2010 and the Flavonoid Intake Data Files, may be downloaded from the Web site of the USDA Food Surveys Research Group at www.ars.usda.gov/nea/bhnrc/fsrg, along with extensive documentation. The Flavonoid Values for Survey Foods 2007-2010 will be used by researchers studying diet-disease relationships related to flavonoids, as well as by policymakers in setting national dietary guidance for flavonoids. Both of these types of application have the potential to benefit the U.S. population as a whole, by increasing knowledge related to flavonoid intake that can be used in promoting better health.

Technical Abstract: Comprehensive databases of the flavonoid content of foods are needed to more accurately estimate dietary intakes of these compounds. The Flavonoid Values for Survey Foods and Beverages 2007-2010 allows estimation of flavonoid intakes based on all foods and beverages reported in the national survey, What We Eat in America (WWEIA), the dietary intake component of NHANES. This release has two components. The first component is a database corresponding to USDA’s Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), the database used in coding foods/beverages and portion sizes and calculating nutrients in WWEIA, NHANES. The Database of Flavonoid Values for USDA Food Codes 2007-2010 includes values (mg per 100 gm of food) for 29 individual flavonoids and six flavonoid classes for all foods in FNDDS 4.1 and 5.0, the versions corresponding to the 2007-2008 and 2009-2010 WWEIA, NHANES survey cycles. Values in the Flavonoid Database are based on values in USDA’s Expanded Database for the Assessment of Dietary Intakes Release 1.1. The second component of this release is a set of Flavonoid Intake Data Files documenting intake, by food and by day, in WWEIA, NHANES during the same time period. Data were collected in 2 non-consecutive 24-hour dietary recalls from 19,009 individuals. Sample weights are provided that can be used in calculating intake estimates representative of the U.S. population. Both the Flavonoid Database and the Flavonoid Intake Data Files may be downloaded from the Web site of the USDA Food Surveys Research Group at www.ars.usda.gov/nea/bhnrc/fsrg. The Flavonoid Database is available in three formats: as a Microsoft Access® database, as a SAS® dataset, and as ASCII text files. The Flavonoid Intake Data Files are available as SAS® files. A documentation file (PDF) is included in each download package and provides detailed information about file formats, application of FDB-EXP in the creation of the Flavonoid Database, and limitations of the database.
