Interpretive Summary: The Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS) is updated and a new version is released every two years to accompany the release of the What We Eat in America, National Health and Nutrition Examination Study dietary intake data. An extensive update resulted in a dramatic increase in the number of food/beverage codes both added and discontinued between FNDDS 5.0 (for 2009-2010) and FNDDS 2011-2012. This Microsoft Excel® file lists each of the 791 codes and main descriptions that were discontinued between FNDDS 5.0 and FNDDS 2011-2012; the rationale for discontinuing each food/beverage code is provided. If appropriate, the discontinued FNDDS code is linked to a new/existing FNDDS 2011-2012 code. The availability of this file provides a valuable resource to link food/beverage codes between FNDDS 5.0 (for 2009-2010) and FNDDS 2111-2102, thus benefiting researchers conducting trend analysis or using the FNDDS to support other food intake databases. The file is available on the FSRG Web site at www.ars.usda.gov.nea/bhnrc/fsrg.

Technical Abstract: For each new version of the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), foods/beverages, portions, and nutrient values are reviewed and updated. New food and beverage codes are added based on changes in consumption and the marketplace; additionally, food/beverage codes are discontinued. This Microsoft Excel® file lists each of the 791 codes and main descriptions that were discontinued between FNDDS 5.0 and FNDDS 2011-2012. The rationale for discontinuation of a code is identified and includes the following: dropped, expanded, consolidated or renumbered. If appropriate, the discontinued FNDDS 5.0 code is linked to one or more new or existing FNDDS 2011-2012 codes. The file is available on the FSRG Web site at www.ars.usda.gov.nea/bhnrc/fsrg.
