Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Screwworms, Cochliomyia hominivorax (Coquerel) (Diptera: Calliphoridae), were devastating pests to all warm blooded animals in the United States and the rest of North America. Successful eradication of screwworms was achieved by using the unique approach called the sterile insect technique. Here we discussed the development and implementation of the program to eradicate screwworms. We also indicated some of the current and future aspects regarding this highly successful program. Finally, we highlighted the importance of scientific exploration, discovery and implementation.
