Interpretive Summary: In the current contribution, a detailed microscopy of the leaf, petiole, stem, aerial root, and root of Piper sarmentosum is provided. In addition, a comparative study of anatomy of leaf, petiole, stem and root of P. betle is provided. The present study showed that the leaves of both the species possess more or less comparable anatomical features with a few differences; whereas, the microscopic features of the petiole, stem, and root of the two species are distinctive. The anatomical features are useful in proper identification of these two morphologically similar plants.

Technical Abstract: Piper sarmentosum Roxb. (synonym, P. lolot C.DC.) is a southeast Asian medicinal plant valued for its medicinal and culinary uses. Hand-sections of the vegetative parts of P. sarmentosum were prepared and the anatomical features were studied by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The present work was undertaken to provide detailed anatomy and micromorphology of the species. In addition, the anatomy of P. sarmentosum was compared with that of P. betle, for proper identification.
