Estimating the vegetation water content using a radar vegetation index[abstract]. Society of Photo-optical Instrumentation and Electronics-Optical Engineering and Applications Conference. 2012 CDROM. Interpretive Summary: Technical Abstract: Vegetation water content is an important biophysical parameter. Here, the Radar Vegetation Index (RVI) based on polarimetric backscatter observations was evaluated for estimating vegetation water content. Analysis utilized a data set obtained by a ground-based multi-frequency polarimetric scatterometer system over the course of an entire growing season of rice and soybean. Prediction equations for estimating the vegetation water content from the RVI were developed. These results demonstrate that valuable new information can be extracted from current and future radar satellite systems on the vegetation condition of two globally important crop types. |
