Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This chapter is one of 52 that will compose the second edition of the Laboratory Manual for the Detection of Plant Pathogenic Bacteria from Seeds and other Planting Material, to be published by the American Phytopathological Society. The chapter presents a description of Pseudomonas savastanoi pv. glycinea, the causal agent of bacterial blight of soybeans, describes disease symptoms on soybean leaves, and discusses disease epidemiology and management. The advantages and disadvantages of various laboratory detection methods are reviewed and relevant references provided. A detailed laboratory protocol is presented, based on best available methods for detecting the bacterium from seed. The updated manual is significantly expanded, with many new chapters. The manual will be of use to individuals involved in the epidemiology of seedborne bacteria, seed health testing, phytosanitary regulation and certification programs.
