Interpretive Summary: Natural fibers produce desirable and quality products that are cultivated and derived from sustainable resources. The United States is pursuing natural fibers as sustainable, environmentally friendly sources for a variety of industrial applications. Flax fiber offers many possibilities towards this goal. Research on flax fiber production, processing, and standards development are required for cost efficient, value-added fibers for sustainable agriculture and new bio-based products. The low load-bearing cost of flax fibers in composites predicts its potential use in composites and other industrial products.

Technical Abstract: The United States is pursuing natural fibers as sustainable, environmentally friendly sources for a variety of industrial applications. Flax (Linum usitatissimum L.) fiber offers many possibilities towards this goal. Research on flax fiber production, processing, and standards development is urgent to support interest in the US, and globally as well, for cost efficient, value-added fibers for sustainable agriculture and new bio-based products. The low load-bearing cost of flax fibers in composites predicts its potential use in composites and other industrial products.
